That Kinda House - A Mix by DJ Stevie

It's September 1 today and in the Philippines, it's the start of the Yuletide season (hehe... I know, it's really quite early), but that's what we've gotten used to and let me be the first one to greet everyone an early Merry Christmas!

Also, another better way to start the month for music geeks (like me), than kicking off the Christmas season, is to welcome another new resident DJ/contributor in the house, Stevie Velasco a.k.a. DJ Stevie. It's really my pleasure to be able to include my buddy, DJ Stevie, in our ever growing roster of Pinoy DJs and contributors, as I remember that he was among the first ones to ever invite me back at his blog, featuring me as one of his resident DJs too and my mix of some Soulful Jazzy Chillout House, and I really appreciate it buddy. Thanks again! :D

Hailing from Hayward, California, his interest in DJ'ing started around the peak days of mobile DJs in the Daly City, California area where he would watch in awe as mobile DJ groups like Spintronix, LiveStyle (Qbert’s group) , Skyway Sounds, etc., would duke it out on 4 Turntables with quick mixes. Everyone he knew in high school either belonged or was affiliated with a group so he eventually decided to start his own mobile gigs as well.

During the late 90’s, he did residency stints for bay area promoters Via Manila, Club Manila (SF, LA and NYC), and Fusion spinning mostly commercial dance anthems.

A born-again like experience occurred to him when he stumbled upon Mark Farina spinning a 4-hour set at a local party and he describes that it was the first time he heard raw house that deep and was hooked ever since and never looked back. He also held a biweekly residency @ Glaskat as well as one nighters at 1015, DNA Lounge among others.

His favorite labels in house music include Amenti, Drop Music, Aroma, DAE, Tango, OM Records, NRK and Myna. There are too many artist/producers, he mentions, but among his faves are Inland Knights, Olivier Desmet, Giom, Da Sunlounge, Bryan Jones, Chuck Love and Fish Go Deep, Joshua Heath, JT Donaldson, Lance Desardi, White Lotus Society and The Littlemen. Currently, he and his group of friends host a monthly event called Retro Manila in the Bay Area.

With a fulltime job as dad and an Oracle Database Administrator, he does what he can to share his love for House music by doing one nighters, gigs, hosting mixes online, hanging out at record stores or forums.

He was able to play at the last WMC (Winter Music Conference) held in Miami alongside DJ Heather, Olivier Desmett and Fred Everything. Nice one bro! :)

He also hosts a bi-monthly online show every 2nd Saturday of the month (10 PM EST; 10 PM PST) with the same name, "That Kinda House," which I highly recommend for house freaks out there.

Lagnat Laki Mix - A DJ Mix by Spazzkid

Here's a very cool and out-of-this-world mix set performed by none other than the Spazzkid himself. I really enjoyed listening to his very unique set as he was able to fuse in different genres of music including some classic OPM hits from Gary V and VST & Company.

He mentions that he was stricken with some colds, cough and fever and spent most of the time in bed and when he felt better, recorded this spur-of-the-moment mix with some random samples and songs that he had on his DJ rig at that time (just to let us know how he came out with such a unique mix title).

Another excellent and very creative (if I may say so) kind of mix to perk up your weekend from the master of cutting, pasting, mashing, sampling, randomizing, freaking us out and what have you... the Spazzkid.

Midnight In A Perfect World (The Beatmeister's KP3 Remix5) - DJ Shadow

Here's the ultimate chillout song for me, great for relaxing and just taking it easy. One of my fave DJs/producers in the trip hop scene, DJ Shadow has been considered a prominent figure in the instrumental hip hop/trip hop scene and has gained popularity with the release of his highly acclaimed debut, "Endtroducing," which was constructed entirely from samples.

This track taken from the album is a typical example of how he was able to construct an excellent and original tune with just the use of sampling. Here are a few of the samples used:

The Beatmeister Crosses Over To The Vault

It's another milestone for me... as The Boy Wonder a.k.a. Benjie Collantes, a US-based veteran New Wave DJ extraordinaire of one of the best New Wave Stations on the web, The Vault Live 365 featuring The Best Obscure Music On The Net, will be playing my Protection Remix of Tuesday Blue's "Tunnel Vision," on his program this Saturday Night between 7 to 8 PM (Pacific Standard Time) or around Sunday noon here in Manila and will be including it on their regular playlist. Groove Purveyor Sessions Volume 1 - A DJ Mix by SPiNTECH

Have no fear, coz Mick Barroga a.k.a. Spintech is here. First of all, would like to welcome Spintech to Totally Mixed Up's roster of superb Pinoy talent.

Mick started "old school" spinning back in 1989 (he's a veteran in DJ'ng indeed) with tons of experience in mixing, remixing and music production. He's currently part of the Electronica Manila Collective (along with Mark Redito -- Spazzkid) and has a local residency radio show at 106.7 Dream FM called Saturday Spin aired every 9:00 PM til' 12:00 MN on weekends. He also does occasional DJ+Live PA guestings from time to time. As for Live PA, he usually play his own compositions, which mostly dwell on the four-to-the-floor genre more commonly known as "house music."

It's really an honor for me to have Spintech as one of our regular contributors and resident DJs with his vast experience in doing mixsets, remixes, mash-ups and music production. This is indeed great news for house music afficionados and those who love hearing new material. I, personally, have already used some of his past remixes and mash-ups for my previous mixsets (check out the archives).

For today's set, Mick focused on the disco/electro side of house from his personal collection including an original tune, which (luckily for us) are still exclusives. What more can I say, but a big thank you for sharing 'em buddy. :)

My Cool New Gear - KORG Kaoss Pad KP3

At last... I finally got hold of my new KORG KP3 Kaoss Pad last Monday. Even though it took a long time, it was worth the wait. It's an FX processor/sampler/MIDI controller all in one unit... now that's what I call value for your money. I was supposed to get the Pioneer EFX500, but after my intense research on each product along with careful and meticulous comparison, I've finally decided to get the KP3 instead as it has much more to offer than the latter.

For The Love Of The Beat - Omni Trio vs. The Beatmeister

Here's some ambient beats from one of my fave drum n' bass artists, Omni Trio. It's been quite a while since my last upload of D&B tunes so I feel now is the right time once more.

Rob Haigh, also known as Omni Trio, is a British electronic, ambient and experimental musician.

In the early 80s he released a series of experimental ambient albums under the names Robert Haigh and Sema - the most notable being ‘Three Seasons Only’ and ‘Notes From Underground’. He also contributed to several Nurse with Wound projects and formed an industrial avant funk band called The Truth Club together with Trefor Goronwy, who would go on to join This Heat, Camberwell Now and become involved with music in the former Soviet Union..

In the 90s Rob developed a unique style of what has become known as ‘ambient Drum and Bass’ and released six acclaimed albums under the name Omni Trio. The Omni Trio sound is notable for its intricate orchestrated production and atmospheric sound palette. Omni Trio was one of the original drum and bass producers, who first released for Moving Shadow as early as 1993. He produced several massive anthems in the period now known as "old skool", including the piano-led "Renegade Snares", "Thru the Vibe", "Feel Good" and the classic "Mainline". Both these featured on his first LP, The Deepest Cut (1995), which is recognised as one of the first jungle albums.

He followed up quickly with Haunted Science in 1996, which included well known tracks like "Trippin' on Broken Beats" and "Nu Birth of Cool". Mainstream trends in dancefloor-oriented drum and bass rapidly diverged from his musical style, and subsequent albums Skeleton Keys (1997), the Detroit techno-influenced Byte Size Life (1999), and Even Angels Cast Shadows (2001) produced no big hits on the scale of his early singles, but they further cemented his reputation as one of the finest album-oriented musicians in drum and bass. Indeed, he was the first artist in the genre to produce six full-length artist albums. The track First Contact made it on the GTA III dance radio station.

Since 2004 after the release of the sixth and final Omni Trio album ‘Rogue Satellite’, Rob has been working on a solo album of "post Minimalist sonic landscapes" called ‘From the Air’ and is collaborating with experimentalist Hafler Trio.

Been too busy this week, but luckily snagged some time to post just before the week ends. Can't think of a blog title suited for today's mix set, so just borrowed Redman's track.

Am posting a mix I've done a couple of months back, which I can say, has 'em all. Reggae, rap, old school and new school hiphop, acid jazz, 70s funk and disco, discopunk, alternative, rap metal and any other genre you might want to include in a mixset.

Here's somethin' new from DJ MoProd. Another collection of cool retro tracks from the 80s & early 90s mixed by da man for your listening pleasure.

Tunes range from mid-80s electronic music of Bomb The Bass and that funky track from Wally Jump Jr. (which I personally like and samples Janet J's track "When I Think Of You") to classic 80s pop from Swing Out Sister, The Pet Shop Boys, El De Barge and Scritti Politti. I know it's a bit late for giving a special tribute to a very important person in all our lives, our mom, that is, as it was last May that the whole world celebrated Mothers' Day, but once again, better late than not at all. This special mash-up mix is a little somethin' for my mom, my mom-in-law and to all the mothers all over the world. Thanks for everything.

It's a simple mash-up of Rihanna's "Take A Bow," going up against the late great Tupac Shakur's "Dear Mama," which he incidentally also wrote for his mother. I felt that the somewhat melancholic, but nice melody of Rihanna's tune goes well with Tupac's poetic tribute.

My Adidas (The Beatmeister vs. DJ Jazzy Jeff Mash-Up ReMix) - Run D.M.C.

Here's my remix of a classic rap tune from those hip hop Hall-Of-Famers from the 80s, Run D.M.C. founded by Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, and Jason "Jam-Master Jay" Mizell. This track from their 1986 album, "Raising Hell" is somewhat of a tribute to Nike's #1 competitor, The Adidas, which the trio ironically loves to wear also. Check out that cool 80s fashion.

OPM Set - An Urban Patriot's MegaMix - The Beatmeister vs. Francis M

'Zup guys! It's been a while since my last post and what better way for a comeback than with another megamix of another one of our great OPM advocates. I know, this should have been posted back for my June 12, Philippines' Independence Day post, but better late than never, right?? It's the 4th of July anyway, so Happy Independence Day to all my American and Fil-American friends and readers in the US.

Now on with the music. Known by a dozen monickers, Master Rapper, FM, The Man From Manila, The Mouth, Francis M, King Of Pinoy Rap, etc., Francis Magalona was credited as being the first Filipino rapper to cross over to mainstream and one of the most idolized, celebrated and influential Pinoy rappers. He was also the original urban patriot, expressed through his music, a long time before APL.d'AP of the The Black Eyed Peas declared that he was Pinoy.

A sibling amongst nine brothers and sisters, Francis Magalona is the son of late Philippine movie screen legends Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran. Starting out as a breakdancer in the early 1980s, he followed in his parents footsteps and ventured out into acting, appearing in several Filipino movies; he branched out to emceeing and released the groundbreaking album Yo! in 1990 garnering the nationistic hit Mga Kababayan (My Countrymen), making Yo! the first commercially released Pinoy rap album in the Philippines.[1] While rapping politically conscious and thought-provoking rhymes in both English and Tagalog, the album was a total success and helped instantly catapult Filipino hip hop from underground to mainstream status and also marked the birth of Makabayang or Nationalistic rap in Filipino hip hop.

FrancisM's contributions to the genre have been featured in several international hip hop publications including the All Music Guide to Hip-Hop: The Definitive Guide to Rap and Hip-Hop (2003) published by Backbeat Books; as well as the May 2004 issue of the U.S. based publication The Source. FrancisM was also given the Pioneer Hall of Fame Award by Empire Entertainment at the 1st Annual Philippine Hip-Hop Music Awards in 2005.[3] (taken from Wikipedia).

Sit Back, Relax, Watch A Movie - The Beatmeister's 80s Movie Soundtrack and Contemporary Rock Mix

Had a stormy weekend (literally) last Saturday and early Sunday morning as we were battered by this freakin' weather disturbance named "Frank" (international codename: Fengshen). We really felt his strength around 3-5 am, dawn of Sunday, with howling winds banging our windows and nonstop rains after.

So because of this, my wife and I decided to just stay home the rest of the day instead of our daily weekend routine of an early morning run, hear mass afterwards and then drop by my in-law's.

Luckily, we were in for a treat as we were able to catch some classic 80s movies from Cinemax and HBO namely, "Just One of The Guys," (the actors were not familiar to me, but the fashion was cool with an okay storyline) and the 1980s film, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" starring that 80s hottie, Phoebe Cates with Sean Pean, Judge Reinhold and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Single White Female).

All in all, I had a fun and relaxing weekend even with the storm, as I was able to spend some quality time with my wifey, which we're not able to do much because of our very busy skeds. :)
